British Shorthair Cat Colors: Blue, Cinnamon, and Fawn Explained

The British Shorthair is recognized in a wide range of colors, but three in particular tend to draw the most questions from prospective owners: blue, cinnamon, and fawn. Understanding where these colors come from and how they relate to one another makes it easier to know what you're looking at when researching a kitten.

Blue: the breed's signature color
Blue is the color most people picture when they think of a British Shorthair. It isn't a distinct pigment on its own — it's the result of a dilution gene acting on black. Where a non-diluted cat produces dense black pigment, the dilution gene spreads that pigment more thinly through each hair shaft, producing the soft, even gray-blue color the breed is known for.
Because dilution is a recessive trait, a kitten needs to inherit the gene from both parents to display a blue coat. This is part of why blue has remained the breed's hallmark color: it's straightforward to work with and consistent from litter to litter when both parents carry it.
Cinnamon: a rarer, warmer alternative
Cinnamon sits on a different part of the color equation entirely. Rather than being a dilution of black, cinnamon is a variant of brown pigment — a lighter, warmer shade than the standard chocolate-brown seen in some other breeds. In British Shorthairs, cinnamon appears as a rich, reddish-brown coat, distinct from the cooler tones of blue.
Cinnamon is considerably less common than blue, since it requires a specific recessive allele that not every breeding line carries. Kittens can only display cinnamon if both parents carry the gene, which is part of why litters with confirmed cinnamon kittens tend to draw more interest.
Fawn: cinnamon meets dilution
Fawn is what happens when the cinnamon gene and the dilution gene are both present in the same cat. The dilution gene does to cinnamon what it does to black — it lightens and softens the pigment — resulting in a pale, warm, almost dusty-rose coat. Fawn is essentially "diluted cinnamon," in the same way blue is "diluted black."
Because fawn requires both the cinnamon allele and the dilution allele, doubled up from each parent, it's the least common of the three colors and typically the most sought-after.
Why color testing matters
Coat color in kittens isn't always obvious at birth, and some colors can be difficult to distinguish visually in the first weeks of life. DNA color panel testing removes the guesswork, confirming a kitten's color genetics rather than relying on early coat appearance alone. Reputable breeders test adult breeding cats and, where needed, individual kittens to confirm color before it's advertised.
What this means when choosing a kitten
Color is a matter of personal preference, and all three — blue, cinnamon, and fawn — occur within the same breed standard and temperament. The distinction is genetic rarity, not quality: a blue kitten and a fawn kitten from health-tested parents are equally sound as companions and equally representative of the breed. Understanding the genetics simply helps set accurate expectations about availability and what to ask a breeder about their testing practices.
